How to write an experienced nurse resume

Nursing resumes for experienced nurses may be somewhat longer than those for nurses relatively new to the profession but not exceptionally so. The general format used will be the same and you can view a variety of nursing resume samples to see the different types of resume structure that are used. The following shows a common way to organize an experienced RN resume and the information that should be included:

  • Name and contact information
  • Objective statement: Provide information on the type of position you are looking for.
  • Skills: Discuss some of your key skills and abilities with a focus on those related to the position you are applying for. Don’t try and list all of your skills. Summarize your abilities in 3-5 functional skill sets focusing on those relevant to the position you are applying for.
  • Formal qualifications and certifications: Provide the details of your nursing degree/degrees (school name, date graduated, degree received). An experienced nursing resume may include reference to any completed clinical rotations. The details of your nursing license will need to be given including the state/states you are licensed in and the date that your license became valid
  • Employment history: List all previous nursing employment beginning with the most recent, and a summary of what your duties were in each job. You should be specific when discussing what area of nursing you worked in such as critical care, ICU, pediatrics etc.

Before starting to write your resume gather all the information that you need such as the dates employed for previous jobs. Once you have everything together, you can use a sample nurse resume as a guide while you write. It is easy to find a sample resume for nurses online. Experienced nurse resume checklist

After writing the resume you should go back and review it to ensure it is complete and nothing has been over looked. You can use a checklist similar to the one shown here when proofreading your resume:

  • Is the resume neat and easy to read with a good balance of white space and text?
  • Does the resume fit well on the page, without appearing cramped or not full?
  • Does the resume utilize bullets and avoid paragraphs and long sentences?
  • Does the resume use bold, italics or underlining to highlight important information?
  • Is all the important information included?
  • Is your overall goal or objective statement supported by the information you provided?
  • Is the resume written in the best format to show off your abilities?
  • Does the resume focus on specific skills and abilities you have that match the job description?
  • Is the resume free of errors and typos?

It should be easy for employers to scan your resume and your skills that match specific job requirements should stand out. Using a checklist while proofreading will help you submit a more effective resume.
